Turbine Disc Creep Failure — Root Cause Analysis

Problem

An aircraft engine MRO facility observed premature creep cracking in IN718 turbine discs after 12,000 cycles at 650°C.

Root Cause Analysis

Metallographic examination revealed undissolved delta-phase (Ni3Nb) at grain boundaries, indicating the solution treatment temperature was below the delta solvus. The material met AMS 5662 chemistry but the forging house deviated from the prescribed 980°C solution anneal.

Resolution

Switched to RAS Alloy IN718 forgings with solution treatment at 980-1010°C verified by ASTM E112 grain size 5-8 and delta-phase dissolution check. Creep rupture life improved by 3.5× at 650°C/690 MPa.
