One sentence: When sourcing nickel alloy forgings, wire and flanges from China, the difference between a reliable supplier and an expensive mistake comes down to three things: mill test certificates, minimum order quantities, and material traceability.
TL;DR — Specify UNS + ASTM/AMS on your RFQ. Require 3.1 MTC per EN 10204. MOQ typically 50-500 kg depending on form. Lead time 4-10 weeks for mill production. Always request a production sample for new supplier qualification.
1. What to Put in Your RFQ
A complete inquiry saves 2-3 rounds of back-and-forth. Include:
- Alloy grade (e.g., Inconel 718, not just “nickel alloy”)
- UNS number (e.g., UNS N07718 — eliminates ambiguity)
- Product form (forging, wire, flange, bar — plus dimensions)
- Applicable standard (AMS 5662, ASTM B637, NACE MR0175)
- Quantity (pieces + total weight)
- Delivery condition (solution treated, aged, annealed)
- Required documentation (MTC, UT report, PMI, grain size)
2. Mill Test Certificates: Non-Negotiable
Every shipment must include a 3.1 MTC (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with:
- Heat number and heat-specific chemistry
- Mechanical test results (tensile, yield, elongation, hardness)
- NDT results (UT/ET/PT as applicable)
- Statement of compliance to the specified standard
For NACE MR0175 sour service grades, also require hardness testing (max 35 HRC for K-500, max 35 HRC for 718 in specific conditions) and HIC/SSC test reports per NACE TM0284/TM0177.
3. Minimum Order Quantities (Typical)

5. Supplier Qualification Checklist
Before placing your first order, verify:
- ISO 9001:2015 certification (current, not expired)
- In-house NDT capability (UT, ET, PT, PMI as applicable)
- Heat treatment furnace calibration records
- Chemical analysis equipment (OES or XRF with certified reference materials)
- Prior experience with your target grade and standard
- Export documentation capability (Certificate of Origin, Form A/B, etc.)
- References from customers in your industry
6. Red Flags
- Supplier cannot provide a sample MTC for review before ordering
- No in-house testing — relies entirely on third-party labs
- Unwilling to accept third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV)
- MOQ significantly below market (potential for material substitution)
- Cannot explain the difference between AMS 5662 and AMS 5663
Bottom line: The cheapest quote is rarely the best value. A $2/kg saving on material that fails in service costs 100× more in downtime and replacement. Quality your supplier before you qualify the price.
